Dixon, Barnes lead UTSA on Friday at H-Town SpeedCity Series II

HOUSTON — Chante Dixon won the mile and anchored the distance medley relay to gold and Lacee Barnes finished third in the shot put with a record-setting performance to lead the UTSA women's track & field team at the H-Town SpeedCity Series II on Friday at Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse.

Making her UTSA debut, Dixon clocked a time of 5:21.33 to win the mile run just ahead of Houston's Macie Ellis (5:22.76). The freshman from South Africa returned to the oval later in the afternoon and combined with Zoie Reyna, Maddy Blair and Sofia Salinas to run a 13:17.04 for gold in the DMR.

Meanwhile, Barnes set a Cayman Islands national record in the shot put to highlight action in the field for the Roadrunners. The Grand Cayman native collected the bronze medal with a mark of 14.70 meters (48-2.75), bettering her previous personal-best of 14.51m (47-7.25) posted in this same facility at last year's FasTrak Collegiate Invitational. She registered the PR measurement on her fourth attempt, which moved her into the No. 3 spot on UTSA's all-time performers list, and she also eclipsed 14.45 meters on her fifth (14.47m/47-5.75) and sixth (14.46m/47-5.25) tries.

Salinas, who hails from Brownsville, also logged a third-place finish for UTSA with a time of 5:44.18 in the mile, crossing just ahead of freshman teammate Julissa Farias, who placed fourth in 5:58.87.

All-American Danielle Spence finished fourth in the triple jump in the first meet of her senior indoor campaign. The Kingston, Jamaica, product skipped to a mark of 12.33m (40-5.5) on her fourth jump of the afternoon.

The 4x400m relay team of Creshaun Cresser, Orla Brothers, Maren Wilms and Alanah Yukich added a fifth-place finish with a time of 3:51.72.

The H-Town SpeedCity Series II continues on Saturday with the men's competition. UTSA will face Cincinnati, Houston, Texas and USF with field events getting underway at 10 a.m. followed by running events beginning at 12:30 p.m.
