Roadrunners to start indoor season on Saturday in Houston

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA track & field teams will open the indoor season on Saturday, Jan. 16, when they compete in the H-Town SpeedCity Series at Yeoman Fieldhouse in Houston.

A partial squad of Roadrunners will compete against host Houston, Houston Baptist, North Texas and Tulane in the meet. Field events are scheduled to get underway with the women's high jump, men's shot put and women's weight throw all starting at 10 a.m. The first running event, the women's 60 meters, will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the meet projected to conclude at 4 p.m.

Live results will be available at flashresultstexas.com/2021/htownspeedcity1-21/ and a free live video stream can be found at facebook.com/UHCougarTF (a Facebook account is not required to watch).

UTSA will send a team of approximately 25 athletes to Houston for the season debut. Headlining the men's contingent are defending Conference USA Indoor champions Bashiru Abdullahi, who broke the school record in the 60m hurdles with a 7.80 clocking last year, and Jack Turner, who took top honors in the league's heptathlon with 5,142 points. Leading the way for the women's group is all-conference performer Ingeborg Gruenwald, who collected a bronze medal in last year's C-USA Indoor long jump with a leap of 6.18m (20-3 ½), and Maren Wilms, who scored 3,495 points to place fourth in the league's pentathlon.

This weekend's meet will mark the first of two H-Town SpeedCity Series meets for UTSA under the leadership of 13th-year Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox, who has been part of the coaching staff for more than two decades. The Roadrunners also are slated to head to College Station for the Aggie Invitational on Jan. 23 and the Charlie Thomas Invitational on Feb. 6 before traveling to Birmingham, Ala., on Feb. 20-21 for the C-USA Indoor Championships. The NCAA Indoor Championships are set for March 12-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
