Haasbroek claims heptathlon with top-five national total on Saturday

HOUSTON -- Sophomore All-American Gary Haasbroek won the men's heptathlon and turned in the fifth-best score in the nation to highlight UTSA track & field at the Houston G5 & Mid-Major Invitational at Yeoman Fieldhouse.

Haasbroek, a native of Melbourne, Australia, finished with a final score of 5,712 points, a total that now ranks fifth in the NCAA this indoor season. After a day-one total of 3,121 on Friday, Haasbroek shined on Saturday in the 60 meters hurdles (8.40), the pole vault (5.00m; 16-4.75) and the 1,000m run (2:47.04).

Freshman Joel McFarlane, a native of Scotland, finished third behind Haasbroek in the heptathlon, with a two-day score of 5,276. Jake McDaniel placed seventh with a score of 4,742.

On the women's side, Norwegian freshman Sigrid Kleive placed fourth in the pentathlon, with German freshman Maren Wilms placing fifth, as each had a total of 3,550 points.

A senior from Uvalde, Texas, Gabby Gonzales finished fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:04.67.

Both of UTSA's distance medley teams placed fourth, with the men's quartet of Zack Kovar, Cameron Hudson, Caleb Devereaux and Matthew David clocking a 10:14.65, and the women's lineup of Sofia Salinas, Creshaun Cresser, Brooke Lomax and Amber Boyd crossing in 12:09.37.

UTSA's triple jump duo of Andre Douglas and Danielle Spence also pulled out a pair of fourth-place finishes on Saturday in the Invitational section. Douglas posted a career-best jump of 15.71m (51-6.5), while Spence skipped to a season-best mark of 12.59m (41-3.75).

Late Friday, during the first day of the meet, UTSA's Bashiru Abdullahi – a native of Nigeria – broke the UTSA record in the 60m hurdles with a 7.80 clocking, eclipsing the previous standard of 7.81 set by Carl Johnson in 2003. He ran a 7.81 in the final to finish first among collegians and second overall.

The Roadrunners will wrap up the regular season indoor slate on Feb. 7-8 in College Station at the Charlie Thomas Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M.
