Volleyball earns AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The UTSA volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for academic excellence, the organization announced Tuesday.

This is the ninth AVCA Team Academic Award in program history and sixth in succession.

UTSA registered a 3.30 cumulative team GPA during the 2018-19 academic year to be one of 189 NCAA Division I programs honored with the award.

Senior Shelby Williams posted a team-best 3.96 GPA, with 12 Roadrunners recording at least a 3.0 GPA, including four registering a 3.5 GPA or higher.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams who display excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored.

As of the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients increases each year except two, while more than doubling in the last eight academic years. Since the awards inception in 1993, the number of award winners increased from 62 to 1,125.
