Carreon jumps into top 10, UTSA in third after second round of C-USA Championship

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Camryn Carreon posted a 3-under-par scorecard to move into the top 10 individuals and help the UTSA women's golf team jump into third place after the second round of the Conference USA Championship on Friday at PGA National Resort's Champion Course (par 72, 6,102 yards).

The Roadrunners were one of three teams that did not finish the first round of the 54-hole tournament, as weather delays that added up to two hours and 45 minutes left five groups on the course once darkness set in on Thursday evening. Those threesomes concluded that round early Friday morning before the second round commenced with UTSA in a tie for fifth place with Charlotte.

Carreon wrote down five birdies in turning in a 69, her 14th par-or-better score of the season, which moved her 10 places into sole possession of seventh at 2-over 146, one shot ahead of No. 71-ranked Audrey Tan of North Texas and only four strokes shy of the leaders, Ellie Roth and Patricia Sinolungan of North Texas, who are sitting at 2-under through 36 holes.

After opening with a 77, Carreon's second round began with birdies on three of her first four holes. She settled for a bogey on No. 6 and finished the front with a 2-under 34. The senior from San Antonio moved to 4-under par with birdies on the 508-yard, par-5 10th and 335-yard, par-4 13th holes, but a bogey on 16 pushed her back to 3-under for the round while turning in the tournament's low score of the day.

Hunter Nugent also was a big mover on the second day of the tournament, as the senior from Canada carded an even-par 72 to vault eight spots into a tie for ninth at 5-over 149. Like Carreon, Nugent opened with a 77 and then logged a five-shot improvement in the second round. She recorded back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2-3 as part of a 1-under 35 on the front and circled two more numbers on the back in matching her best score of the season.

Daniela Abonce has a share of 15th place at 7-over 151. The freshman from Mexico followed a 3-over 75 with a 76 in the second round on the strength of a trio of birdies.

Morgan Ellison and Olivia Williams round out the UTSA lineup in 20th (76-79—155) and 38th (81-83—164), respectively.

UTSA registered a 296 for the second round, a nine-stroke improvement from the opening round. The Roadrunners have totaled a 601, six shots ahead of FIU and eight in front of a tie for fifth between Charlotte and Florida Atlantic.

No. 35 North Texas leads the team race with a 578, while WKU is in second with a 589.

The Roadrunners will be paired with North Texas and WKU for the final round with tee times starting at 10:57 a.m. CT Saturday off No. 1.
