McLennan standouts ink with UTSA softball

Katia Reyes and Madison Hornback join the program from top-ranked McLennan Community College

SAN ANTONIO — On Wednesday, UTSA softball coach Vann Stuedeman officially announced the signings of Katia Reyes and Madison Hornback, who join following standout careers at a McLennan Community College program that's spent the past nine weeks atop the NJCAA national rankings.

Katia Reyes | 5-7 | RHP/INF | R/R | Weslaco, Texas | Weslaco HS | McLennan CC

Reyes has been a top performer for the Highlanders, propelling the squad to a 2023 Conference Championship while collecting first-team all-region and all-conference accolades as a pitcher. Recently, she was named NTJCAC Most Valuable Pitcher, Most Valuable Player, first-team all-conference and first-team all-region. Across her NJCAA career, she's compiled a 23-4 record, and as a sophomore, she's gone 13-0 with a stellar 0.77 ERA that sits fourth nationally and a 0.68 WHIP that is third.

At the dish, Reyes boasts a .434 AVG and is one of the NJCAA's top power hitters, ranking fifth in home runs (24), fourth in RBIs (94), 6th in total bases (160), and 6th in slugging percentage (1.063).

Before making her way to McLennan, Reyes clubbed at RGV Heat and played her high school ball for the Weslaco Panthers. There, she graduated with honors, boasting a 3.87 GPA and helping the squad to a District 32-6A championship in her first year. She also reached the elite eight as a senior, collecting a slew of accolades in the process. Reyes was crowned Unanimous MVP in her senior season, adding that honor to a trophy case that already included a Defensive MVP award from her junior season and a Newcomer of the Year selection in her rookie year. Additionally, she played varsity volleyball for the Panthers, winning a district championship in her senior season.

Reyes is the daughter of Amy and Eloy Reyes. She has two brothers, Eloy Jr. and Sirr Carlos, and one sister, Venesa. Additionally, at UTSA, Reyes will study for a career in social work.

Head Coach Vann Stuedeman on Reyes:

“Katia can do it all. She hits for average and power, plays shortstop, and pitches. She has been coached by one of the best coaches, Chris Berry, at McLennan and is used to winning. We can't wait to get her on campus.”

Madison Hornback | 5-4 | UTL | R/R | West Columbia, Texas | Columbia HS | McLennan CC

A 2023 TJCAC first-team all-conference pick, NJCAA all-region selection, and an NFCA NJCAA Division I West second-team all-region honoree, Hornback heads to UTSA after posting a .389 AVG across two seasons.

In 2024, she's helped the No. 1 Highlanders to an incredible 54-2 record, recording 29 RBIs, scoring 44 runs, and swiping 19 bags. For her efforts, she recently was awarded second-team all-conference honors as an infielder.

Previously, Hornback was one of Columbia's best, as she led the Lady Necks as far as the fifth round of the playoffs her senior year. As a freshman, she was named District 25-4A Newcomer of the Year, ahead of two all-district and all-county awards and a 2022 District MVP award. At Columbia, she was also an All-American cheerleader and an all-district performer in basketball and volleyball.

In the classroom, Hornback maintained a 4.0 GPA, which helped her earn three academic all-district nods and a 2022 Academic all-state pick.

Hornback plans to study public health at UTSA and become a pediatric oncologist. She is the daughter of Amanda Galbreath and Jeremy Hornback, has a stepfather, Joe Galbreath, and is the sister of Kason Galbreath and Allison Hornback. She is also related to Riley and Ryan Hornback, who were drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates, respectively.

Head Coach Vann Stuedeman on Hornback:

“Maddie is extremely versatile. Coach Berry at McLennan has done an amazing job molding her into the ultimate utility player. She is a skilled player and can play anywhere the team needs her. She is fast and smart on the base path giving us depth in our ability to steal bases. She is a high academic student athlete, excelling both in the classroom and on the field.”

Reyes and Hornback become the sixth and seventh members of the 2025 signing class, joining Ava EldridgeReagan StoudtSabrina WickSkylar Rucker, and Kaylie Olivarez
