Pirog, Szalek secure silver on final day of C-USA Outdoor Championships

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Andrew Pirog raced to a runner-up finish in the 400-meter hurdles and Grant Szalek secured the silver medal in the triple jump on Sunday to help the UTSA men finish sixth at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Dean A. Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium.

Pirog closed out his conference career by earning his seventh C-USA medal. The San Antonio Reagan High School product clocked a personal-best time of 51.08 seconds for his second silver and third overall league medal in the 400m hurdles. Pirog bettered his previous PR of 51.32 posted in a third-place effort two years ago at this meet, and he now ranks 21st on the latest NCAA West Preliminary Round qualifying list.

Szalek collected the fourth C-USA medal of his short UTSA career with a runner-up showing in the triple jump. The Perth, Australia, native skipped to a mark of 15.63m (51-3.5) on his third trip down the runway, nearly matching it with a 15.62m measurement on his next attempt. It marked his top wind-legal jump as a collegian and stands second behind his wind-aided 15.84m (51-11.75) leap posted in winning the Roadrunner Invitational last month.

On the track, the UTSA relay teams posted a pair of top-eight finishes. The 4x400m relay team of Noah Rhodes, Dylan Heritage, Logan Masters and Pirog passed the baton to a fifth-place time of 3:17.55 in the final race of the evening. The 4x1 quartet of King Antony Ma, Kaleb Campbell, Christie Le Roux and Lirim Emerllahu was seventh in 41.34.

Campbell also notched a seventh-place finish in the 100m with a 10.73 clocking that matched his wind-legal PR posted in Saturday's prelims.

In other Sunday action, Jorge Ayala scratched a point in the shot put with an eighth-place mark of 15.98m (52-5.25).

UTSA tallied 69 points for sixth place, five points behind Rice and 12 ahead of Southern Miss in the team race won by Charlotte.

Pirog and Szalek were the final two of six total podium finishes for the Roadrunners at the meet.

On Friday, Jack Turner and Joel McFarlane wrapped up a 1-2 showing in the decathlon. Turner earned his third career C-USA gold medal by breaking a 19-year-old school record with 7,659 points, while McFarlane was second with 7,148, the top point total of his young collegiate career.

On Saturday, Sam Healy leaped to a distance of 7.59m (24-11) for a runner-up finish in the long jump, just ahead of Turner's 7.47m (24-6.25) measurement.

The Roadrunners will return to action on May 26-29 when they head to College Station for the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
