HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The UTSA men's golf team is in seventh place after the first day of the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate, which began on Monday at Hattiesburg Country Club (par 71/6,902 yards).
The Roadrunners carded a 4-over-par 288 in the opening round and followed that with a two-shot improvement in the afternoon. Their 36-hole total of 6-over 574 is two shots better than Louisiana Tech (576) and three in front of Mississippi State (577). UTSA is two shots behind Louisiana-Monroe (572) and only four strokes out of the top five. Southeastern Louisiana leads the 15-team field at 7-under 561, followed by Southern Miss (565), Louisiana-Lafayette (567), Mississippi (570) and Sam Houston State (570).
Individually, Bryce Alley, Garrison Lackey and Zander Lozano all are tied for 28th with 18 holes remaining. Alley, a sophomore from Longview Pine Tree, fired a pair of 72s on the strength of four birdies, two in each round. Lackey, a senior from Weslaco, opened with a 74 and then posted four birdies en route to a 70 in the afternoon, the lowest of the day by a Roadrunner. Lozano, a freshman from Boerne Champion, wrote down four birdies as part of a 71 in the morning and then added his fifth in a second-round 73.
J.J. Lindsey is tied for 46th after registering a 71-76—147 and Brett Hogan fought back from an 80 with a 71 and is tied for 65th (151).
Casey Fernandez of Southern Miss, the host team, leads the 84-player field at 8-under 134 (68-66).
The final round is slated to tee off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
