BRYAN — Behind a 2-under-par 70 from Brogan Townend, the UTSA women’s golf team is in sixth place after two rounds of The “Mo”Morial, which continued on Tuesday at Traditions Club (par 72/6,206 yards).
Townend, a junior from Blackburn, England, fired a 2-under 34 on the front nine on the strength of birdies on the par-4 third and par-4 ninth. After posting bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11, she battled back with a three on the par-4 13th and a two on the par-3 16th en route to her best round since a 70 on the second day of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in February. Townend turned in a seven-shot improvement from her round-one score of 77 on Monday and moved into a tie for 11th place (147) with 18 holes remaining on Wednesday.
Nikki Long is three shots behind Townend in a tie for 19th at 6-over 150. The freshman from San Antonio Johnson High School carded a 77 on Tuesday after making her UTSA debut with a 73 on Monday.
Abby Portyrata is tied for 26th at 74-79—153, while Becky McGeehan and Libby Thomas round out the UTSA lineup in 36th (75-80—155) and 59th (82-83—165), respectively. Playing as an individual, Aimee Ponte is tied for 39th (79-77—156).
The Roadrunners posted a 306 and are in sixth place at 605, just five shots behind No. 32 Kentucky (600). No. 28 Auburn leads the 11-team field at 2-over 578 (291-287), followed by No. 27 Texas A&M and No. 31 Florida State (587) and Houston (598).
The final round is scheduled to get underway with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
