SAN ANTONIO ? UTSA junior Shelly Martinez holds a six-shot lead after shooting a five-under-par 66 on Friday in first round action of the Greater San Antonio Women’s Golf Championship played at Brackenridge Golf Course.
The Pecos native was the lone player to break par in the 65-player, two-division field. She holds a comfortable advantage over Ursula Perez, who stands in second place after turning in a one-over 72.
A trio of Roadrunners joined Martinez in the three-day tournament. Junior Madison McClain sits in a three-way tie for third place with a 74, while former UTSA standout and 2009 Southland Conference individual medalist Allie Jordan fired a 76 and trails McClain by two strokes. Junior Kayla McBride carded a 79 and tied for 11th.
The second round gets underway Saturday morning.
