SAN ANTONIO ? UTSA will be in search of its fifth consecutive home-opening victory when it plays a 7 p.m. match against Georgia on Wednesday at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners (1-6) will look to get back on the winning track against a Bulldogs squad that has won five of their first seven matches of the 2008 season. It will mark the first meeting between the two programs.
Wednesday’s contest will be streamed live (combined audio/video feed) on goUTSA.com for free and Ed Suarez is back for his third season as the program’s home play-by-play voice (please note that a Rowdy Zone subscription will be required for the remainder of the season).
Sophomore outside hitter Kendra Rowland has been named to back-to-back all-tournament teams to start her second season in navy blue and orange. She leads the club in kills (89/3.4 ps) and ranks second in digs (67/2.6 ps). Meanwhile, freshman Kelsey Jewasko has been a steady force along the back row, as she has a team-high 111 digs (4.3 ps). She joined Rowland on last weekend's Baylor Classic All-Tournament Team and was voted the event's top libero. Freshman outside hitter Elise Huskey has been solid in the early going both offensively and defensively. She owns a team-best 12 total blocks and 11 service aces, ranks second with 56 winners (2.2 ps) and stands third with 61 digs (2.4 ps).
Georgia, a member of the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division, is off to a solid start to the season. This week marks the beginning of a four-match road swing throughout mid-Texas. The Bulldogs, who will play in Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational this weekend, won 17 matches last fall and that total, coupled with eight in SEC play, surpassed the combined mark from 2005-06. Their 11-win improvement a year ago was the best single-season turnaround in school history.
Prior to the match, the UTSA Marketing & Promotions Department will host a kickoff party that will include free food, T-shirts and schedule cards.
UTSA is back on the road again this weekend. The Roadrunners will play in the DePaul Invitational, facing host DePaul at 7:30 p.m. on Friday before squaring off with Denver (10 a.m.) and Ball State (5 p.m.) the following day. All the matches can be heard on goUTSA.com with a Rowdy Zone subscription.
