Mecke collects second consecutive SLC Athlete of the Week honor

Dana Mecke

FRISCO ? UTSA junior Dana Mecke has been named Southland Conference Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Mecke posted a convincing victory in the women’s 3-mile race at the Texas State Invitational on Saturday in San Marcos. The junior from Bulverde, Texas, clocked a 17:30.5 on the Gary Job Corps trail, easily outdistancing runner-up Larkin Geyer of Texas (17:47.0) for top honors. The Smithson Valley product’s win helped lead the Roadrunners to a runner-up team finish behind the Longhorns.

It is the third career weekly accolade for Mecke, who shared the honor last week with teammate Kayla Pratt after the duo teamed up to win a relay event at the UTSA opener.

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for a player from his or her own school.
