| May 26, 2006 Brown qualifies for nationals with school record in long jump
AUSTIN – Sophomore Steven Brown’s fourth-place finish in the long jump highlighted UTSA’s first day of competition at the 2006 NCAA Midwest Regional. Brown (right) leaped a school-record 7.79 meters (25-6 ľ) and qualified for the NCAA Championships, which take place June 7-10 in Sacramento, Calif. His jump broke Tomm Wisloff’s 20-year-old record set in 1986 (25-6 ˝).
Three Roadrunners men advanced to Saturday’s finals in their preliminary heats. Senior T.R. Sissel was the top qualifier in the 400m hurdles, circling the oval in a career-best 51.25. Sophomore William Vese placed seventh in the 110m hurdles (13.91) and junior Larry Brooks was the eighth and final qualifier in the 800m (1:49.93).
Benson Cheserek (3,000m steeplechase), Joseph Burton (javelin) and UTSA’s 4x400m relay team did not compete on Friday and will participate in their event finals tomorrow evening.
On the women’s side, sophomore Brittany Epps did not score in the long jump (5.83m) and juniors Veronica Silva (800m/2:14.24) and Lindsey Sidney (100m hurdles/13.92) did not qualify for the finals in their respective events.
The remaining field events get underway at 1 p.m. on Saturday, while the track finals commence at 5:30 p.m. at Mike A. Myers Stadium. |
