Roadrunners swept by LSU

SAN ANTONIO - Ivana Kuzmic had eight total blocks and Jelena Mijatovic posted 12 kills to help lead the LSU volleyball team to a 30-21, 30-20, 30-25 sweep of UTSA during the opening day of the UTSA Dome Rally Friday afternoon at the Alamodome.

With the loss, the Roadrunners fall to 3-2 on the season, while LSU remains undefeated at 7-0.

LSU used a strong block to help limit UTSA to a .081 hitting percentage and just 34 kills for the match. Kuzmic had one solo and six block assists, while Lauren Leaumont and Melody Clark added four blocks apiece.

Junior Brittany Hildebrand (Converse, Texas/Judson HS) led the Roadrunners with nine kills, while junior Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) and senior Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas/LBJ) added seven and six, respectively.

LSU broke a 7-7 tie in game one with a 10-3 run to build a 17-10 lead. UTSA was able to cut the deficit to five as late as 23-18 but the Tigers used three kills from Mijatovic down the stretch in the 30-21 victory.

The Tigers held the Roadrunners to a .000 hitting percentage in game two, a 30-20 decision. LSU used a late 8-2 run to break away from UTSA.

In game three, UTSA took an 11-9 lead out of the gates and eventually built an 18-15 advantage, only to have LSU reel off a 10-1 run for a 25-19 lead of its own. The Roadrunners mounted a rally, pulling to within four at 27-23, but the Tigers ended the match with a 5-2 run.

In other Friday action at the Dome Rally, Rice came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Oklahoma in five games, 27-30, 26-30, 30-24, 30-18, 15-13. No. 6-ranked Florida downed No. 13 Texas A&M, 30-28, 19-30, 30-24, 30-26, and No. 19 Notre Dame upset No. 8 Southern California, 23-30, 32-30, 30-26, 30-27.

Saturday’s action gets underway at 11 a.m. with Texas A&M against LSU, followed by Oklahoma and Notre Dame at 1:30 p.m., Southern Cal and Florida at 4:30 p.m. and UTSA and Rice at 7 p.m.
