UTSA beats Louisiana Monroe, 6-1; drops 4-3 heartbreaker at Northwestern State
NATCHITOCHES, La. - Coming off a convincing 6-1 win at Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday, UTSA dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker at Northwestern State on Sunday at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
With the win, Northwestern State improved to 13-3 overall and finishes the Southland Conference regular season with a 9-1 mark. UTSA fell to 8-10 and 7-3.
UTSA's top doubles tandem of junior Paula Erausquin and sophomore Barbara Mooney downed Eliza Young and Catalina Villegas at No. 1, 8-3, but the Lady Demons took the other two matches to grab an early 1-0 lead.
Erausquin easily disposed of Young at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, but Northwestern State won straight set matches at Nos. 2 and 6. At No. 3, Mooney won over Villegas in the third set, 6-4, 5-7, 2-3 (ret.), and at No. 4, senior Kateryna Romanenko beat Magali Van de Bergh in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. the Lady Demons were victorious on court five and won the match, 4-3.
UTSA returns home to host Incarnate Word on Thursday, April 8, at 3 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
