Roadrunners win 10th straight, complete sweep of SFA with 3-0 victory Sunday

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO - Freshman Ursula Mares pitched her third consecutive complete-game shutout and freshman Aimee Murray went 3-for-3 to help lead UTSA past Stephen F. Austin, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field. UTSA won its 10th straight game and improves to 25-14 overall and 13-5 in the Southland Conference.

After winning both games of a doubleheader on Saturday, 1-0 and 7-5, the Roadrunners completed the sweep and remain in sole possession of second place in the conference. The 25-14 start is the best for UTSA since the 1998 squad marched through the first 39 games with a 27-12 record.

Mares hurled her third shutout in a row and has run her scoreless innings streak to 21. She worked all seven innings, allowing five hits and no walks and striking out four batters. She improved to 16-9 on the season and 9-4 in the SLC. Her earned-run average for the season now stands at 2.34. In the three games this week, including her first career no-hitter against Texas Southern on April 1, Mares pitched 19 scoreless innings, allowing just 10 hits and two walks against 18 strikeouts. Opponents hit just .154 off her.

Following two scoreless innings on Sunday, UTSA broke through for two runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Jessica Els doubled off the left-center field fence and senior Christy Brownlee walked to put runners at first and second with one out. Murray slapped a singled to right field scoring Els. Brownlee came home when the ball got away from the catcher to put UTSA up 2-0.

Murray scored UTSA's other run in the bottom of the sixth. She led off with a bunt single, advanced to second on a walk to junior Krystal Gibson and to third on an intentional walk to sophomore Amanda Horton. Junior Jennifer Davis came through with a clutch sacrifice fly to center, putting the Roadrunners up 3-0.

The Roadrunners return to action on Thursday, April 8, when they travel to Houston for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Texas Southern. UTSA then plays a key, three-game conference series at Northwestern State on Friday-Saturday, April 9-10, in Natchitoches, La.
