LeRoy Hurd named Southland Conference Player of the Week

PLANO, Texas – After helping the University of Texas-San Antonio to a 2-0 week, LeRoy Hurd has been voted Southland Conference men's basketball player of the week. Following is a look at his accomplishments along with others nominated for the weekly award. 

LeRoy Hurd, Texas-San Antonio, Sr., F, 6-7, Moss Point, Miss., Hurd led UTSA to a 2-0 week for the first time this season by averaging 24.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Hurd, who has eight double-doubles this season, scored 26 points with 12 rebounds in a 95-91 overtime win at Lamar. He came back with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds in a home win over Nicholls State. For the week, he shot 14-of-30 (46.6 percent) from the field and 19-of-23 (82.6 percent) from the free throw line. He also had a season-high three blocked shots against Nicholls State. UTSA is on a season-high three-game winning streak.

The Roadrunners will return to action next Wednesday, Feb. 4 with a 7 p.m. game at Stephen F. Austin. The game can be heard on KSJL Radio (92.5 FM/810 AM) and www.goUTSA.com beginning at 6:30 p.m.

HONOR ROLL

Roosevelt Brown, TXST, Sr., G, 6-3, Duncanville, Texas
Brown helped the Bobcats earn a split on their Louisiana road swing with  a Saturday win against co-number one Northwestern State. He led all scorers in the game with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-2 from three-point range and 6-of-7 from the line. He scored 17 of the 22 points after halftime as the Bobcats came from down 10 at the break. For the week, Brown averaged 15 points, 3.5 rebounds and shot 50 percent from the floor.

Antonio Burks, SFA, Sr., F, 6-8, Texarkana, Ark.
Burks scored a team-high 18 points to lead SFA to a 68-67 win over Sam Houston before a regional television audience on FOX Sports Net. Burks was 5-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 at the line in leading SFA back from a 13-point first-half deficit.

Brandon Horn, ULM, Sr., G, 6-0, Florien, La.
Horn scored a career-high 20 points as the Indians handed Texas State its first conference loss Thursday night. In bettering his career scoring high by six points, Horn hit 5-of-6 three-point shots and 6-of-9 shots from the field. In Saturday's loss to Sam Houston State, Horn rebounded from a subpar first half, when he did not score, to finish with eight points, going 6-of-6 from the foul line.

Terrell Petteway, LU, Sr., F, 6-7, Galveston, Texas
Petteway averaged 21.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games, helping Lamar post a 1-1 record. He scored 26 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field in Lamar's 95-91 overtime loss to Texas-San Antonio, and dished out a career-high four assists. He followed with 16 points, on 6-of-11 shooting, and eight rebounds in Lamar's 83-72 win over Texas-Arlington. For the week, he shot 54.8 percent (17-31) from the field and 66.7 percent (8-12) from the free throw line.

Joe Thompson, SHSU, Jr., F, 6-4, Wharton, Texas
Thompson scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Sam Houston State to a 73-70 victory at Louisiana-Monroe, Sam Houston State's first road victory of the year. His three-point basket in the final 30 seconds was the game-winner. Thompson also pulled down seven rebounds and had two assists in a 68-67 loss at SFA on Thursday on Fox Sports Net.

Jermaine Wallace, NWLa., So., G, 6-3, Heflin, La.
Wallace averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 blocks in two games, a 97-82 win over Hutson-Tillotson College and a 67-64 loss to Texas State. He led the Demons in scoring in both games, getting 21 points in the win.

Terry West, SLU, Sr., F, 6-6, Camilla, Ga.
After scoring a total of 21 points in his last three games, West scored 22 points to lead four players in double figures and help the Lions maintain their best-ever start in school history with an 83-72 win over in-state rival McNeese State in their only decision of the week. He made his first seven shots of the game and finished 10-of-13 (.769) from the floor, including 2-for-2 from 3-point land. West grabbed one rebound, while recording one assist, one steal and one blocked shot.
