Werre leads Roadrunners on first day of Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. — Sophomore Ryan Werre shot a two-under-par 142 on Monday and the UTSA men's golf team is tied for 14th after the first day of the 27th annual Louisiana Classics, which is being played at Oakbourne Country Club (par 72/6,898 yards).

Werre opened his third spring event by carding an even-par 72 that was highlighted by five birdies. He followed that with a two-under 70 in the afternoon, a round that was highlighted by four more birdies and an eagle three on the par-five seventh hole. The Redcliff, Alberta, native is tied for 16th place in the 84-player field and he is six shots back of the eight-under pace set by LSU's Andrew Presley (136=68-68).

Redshirt freshman Martin Board is tied for 54th after turning in a 148 (74-74), while junior Mitchell Griffin is one shot back in a tie for 58th (149=74-75). Juniors Stanton Tondre and Taylor Koser are in 77th (153=74-79) and 82nd (154=80-74), respectively.

The Roadrunners carded rounds of 294 and 293 and are tied with Southern Mississippi at 11-over 587 with 18 holes remaining. No. 25 LSU is atop the team standings after firing a 14-under 562 (283-279) and No. 21 Kent State (566), No. 43 Memphis (567), No. 45 SMU (569) and Tulsa (574) round out the top five.

The final round is scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
