HOUSTON — Sophomore Ryan Werre is tied for third and the UTSA men's golf team is tied for sixth after the first day of the Rice Intercollegiate, the opening two rounds of which were played on Monday at Westwood Golf Club (par 72/7,184 yards).
Werre opened the 54-hole tournament with a two-under-par 70 and followed that with an even-par 72 in the second 18. The Redcliff, Alberta, native carded eight birdies on the day — four in each round — and he is tied with New Mexico State's Zachery Fullerton at two-under 142. The pair sits just one stroke behind day-one leaders Eric Chun of Northwestern (71-70=141) and Kyle Westmoreland of Air Force (70-71=141).
Werre's day helped put the Roadrunners in a tie with Louisiana-Monroe for sixth place in the 15-team field. UTSA fired rounds of 294 and 291 and its 36-hole tally of nine-over 585 is nine shots off the pace set by Northwestern (576). Florida Gulf Coast is in second at 579, followed by Houston (582), No. 35 Wichita State (583) and Louisiana Tech (583).
Junior Stanton Tondre and redshirt freshman Martin Board are tied for 32nd, as they both turned in 148s (76-72). Meanwhile, juniors Taylor Koser and Mitchell Griffin are tied for 38th (74-75=149) and 46th (74-76=150), respectively.
The final round tees off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
