FRISCO — The UTSA women’s basketball team has been picked to win the Southland Conference’s West Division by both the league’s head coaches and sports information directors, as announced on Wednesday by the conference office.

The Roadrunners, who return two starters and eight letterwinners from last season’s team that finished 16-15 overall and 11-5 in conference play, received six first-place votes and 60 points from the coaches and five first-place nods and 57 points from SIDs.

Stephen F. Austin (56 points) picked up four first-place votes from the coaches, while Sam Houston State (52 points) received a pair. UT Arlington (31 points), Texas State (26 points) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (21 points) rounded out the West Division rankings.

The SIDs predicted the same order of finish for the West with Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State each collecting three first-place votes and Texas State one.

Reigning Southland Champion McNeese State was picked to win the East with nine first-place votes and 64 points from both the coaches and SIDs.

The coaches picked Central Arkansas, Lamar, Northwestern State, Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana to finish behind the Cowgirls. The SIDs selected the same order with the exception of Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls, who were slotted fifth and sixth, respectively.

Reigning Southland Player of the Year Megan Herbert (Central Arkansas) heads the preseason all-conference first-team followed by Ashlyn Baggett (McNeese State), Kalis Loyd (Lamar), Tammara Marion (Stephen F. Austin) and Britni Martin (Sam Houston State).

KK Babin (Nicholls), Caitlyn Baggett (McNeese State), Diamond Ford (Texas State), Sequeena Thomas (Sam Houston State) and Monique Whittaker (Lamar) comprise the second team.
