UTSA tops Texas-Pan American on Friday

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA won its third consecutive match to open the season with a 6-1 victory against Texas-Pan American on Friday at the UTSA Tennis Center.

Freshman Irene Gandara Gonzalez provided the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Cindy Sands at No. 6 singles.

The Roadrunners won the doubles session following a sweep on all three courts.

Senior Stefanie Peana and sophomore Isabelle Jonsson both streaked past their opponents for 6-2, 6-0 victories at Nos. 1 and 2 singles to give UTSA a commanding 3-0 advantage.

After Gandara Gonzalez clinched the match, junior Natalie Hand finished off Blanca Garcia Izaquirre in straight sets at the fifth position.

The Broncs (0-1) picked up their lone point when Malin Andersen knocked off senior Micaela Silva in three sets at the No. 3 spot.

Junior Kavya Menon staved off a late charge from Wanda Beguelin with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) triumph at fourth singles to wrap up the match.

UTSA will travel to Houston for a 12 p.m. non-conference match on Sunday.
