SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head men’s basketball coach Brooks Thompson announced Friday that he has signed Lucas O’Brien (Chandler, Ariz./Perry HS) to a National Letter of Intent. The 6-foot-10, 220-pound center will join the Roadrunners for the 2012-13 season.
“We are very excited about signing Lucas,” Thompson said. “He is a physical presence inside, but he also has very good perimeter skills and can step out and knock down jump shots. Lucas has a very high ceiling and he’s an excellent student and individual, as well. He’s going to be a great addition to our program and we look forward to seeing him in a UTSA uniform next season.”
O’Brien is set to begin his senior season next week under head coach Mark Nold at Perry High School in Gilbert, Ariz. As a junior, he averaged 13.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game for the Pumas. He posted 30 points and eight rebounds against Palo Verde High School and four double-doubles, including 25 points and 13 boards against Skyline and 23 and 12 versus Apollo. The All-East Valley Region honoree has helped his team to back-to-back Arizona 5A playoff appearances.
A three-star recruit by Rivals.com and a top 75 recruit by MaxPreps.com, O’Brien also played for the Arizona Magic AAU squad under head coach Justin Allen and participated in the Academic All West Camp. An excellent student, O’Brien carries a 3.87 GPA.
