SAN ANTONIO — UTSA used a 22-6 run midway through the second half to break a 44-all tie and the Roadrunners defeated McMurry 80-57 in the squad’s lone exhibition game on Saturday at the Convocation Center.

Freshman Kamra King went 11-of-12 from the free throw line and scored a game-high 16 points, while sophomore Judy Jones recorded 15 in her first action since the 2009-10 season. Meanwhile, junior Jalisa Montgomery, freshman Ashley Spaletta and junior Whitney Wright each scored 10 points.

Keshia Collins recorded a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards to lead the War Hawks.

Jones notched the first points of the campaign at the free throw line and it proved to be UTSA’s largest lead of the opening stanza. McMurry scored five straight points and did not trail again until another one-point deficit with 20 seconds to play in the half.

The period saw four ties, three lead changes and ended with the War Hawks clinging to a 32-31 advantage.

A free throw from Collins with 13:50 to play tied the game for the ninth and final time and the Roadrunners then made their move.

The big run started with a pair of makes at the charity stripe by Jones and King, which was followed by a 3-pointer from Spaletta to make it 51-44.

In all, Spaletta made three treys, including one to cap the run, which gave UTSA a 66-50 lead with just under six minutes to play.

The Roadrunners coasted from that point, never letting the lead dip below 14 en route to their 12th exhibition win in as many tries since 2005.

The defense held McMurry to just 30 percent shooting for the contest, including 22 percent in the second half, and it forced 27 turnovers. They turned those miscues into 29 points and the bench, led by King, notched 45 points to just 17 from the War Hawks.

UTSA will open the regular season against Missouri on Friday, Nov. 11. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
