SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s golf team will look to defend its Alamo Invitational crown next season against a strong, 16-team field that features seven programs currently ranked in golfstat.com’s top 25, head coach Carrie Parnaby announced today. The fourth annual three-day event will take place from Oct. 28-30 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
In addition to the Roadrunners, who tote a No. 53 ranking into the spring season, the field will includes #10 LSU, #13 Texas A&M, #16 Tennessee, #20 Baylor, #22 Arizona, #23 Colorado, #25 Oklahoma, #28 Texas Tech, #39 Kentucky, #47 Central Florida, #48 Texas State, #50 Tulane, #51 East Carolina, #56 North Texas and #104 SMU.
The group owns two national titles, 31 conference championships and will include LSU’s Austin Ernst, the 2011 NCAA Individual Champion.
The event will take place at Briggs, which will be the host of the 2012 USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. The facility recently was rated as the top residential course in Texas for the sixth consecutive year by Golfweek. The Tom Fazio signature course is the home of UTSA golf and the Alamo Invitational since the inaugural event in 2009.
The San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau (SACVB) has been a significant supporter of the tournament since its inception. It plays a great part in making the tournament extra special for players, coaches and spectators and helps show just what a fantastic city San Antonio is for golf. Due to the relationship with the SACVB, UTSA is able to host a first-class event that attracts one of the best fields in women’s college golf to San Antonio.
John Kauth also has been a strong supporter of UTSA golf for several years. The event is named in memory of his mother, Maryb S. Kauth, and it represents her love for the game of golf.
UTSA edged Baylor by three strokes for the team title last fall with the help of sophomore Fabiola Arriaga, who earned the individual crown with a final scorecard of 213. Tennessee took home the team championship in 2009, while TCU claimed the top spot in 2010 behind Brooke Beeler’s tournament record 212.
