SAN MARCOS — Junior Phil Steinert finished second in the hammer throw and UTSA scored a total of 16 points on Friday's opening day of the Southland Conference Championships, which has them in second place through three scored events.

Steinert tossed the implement 187-4 (57.11m) en route to his silver medal and that just five inches shy of the winning toss recorded by McNeese State's Jared Crafton. Classmate Richard Garrett Jr. placed sixth with a throw of 175-2 (53.39m), which gave the Roadrunners a combined 11 points in the event.

Meanwhile, senior Albert Cardenas clocked a 31:41.25 in the 10,000 meters, which was good for fourth place in the 25-man field.

McNeese State has a commanding 33-point lead over UTSA after netting 49 total points during the opening day of competition. Lamar (15) trails the Roadrunners by just one point in the team standings.

The three-day meet continues on Saturday.
