SAN ANTONIO — Led by an even-par 72 from junior Stanton Tondre, UTSA is tied for 10th place after Sunday's opening 18 holes of the third annual Lone Star Invitational.
Tondre registered four birdies en route to bettering the low round of his debut season by two strokes and he is tied for 23rd in the 84-man field.
The Roadrunners carded a four-over-par 292 and are tied with Southland Conference rival and defending champion UT Arlington and Rice for 10th place in the 15-team field. That trio is two shots behind Weber State for ninth, three behind Sam Houston State and four back of Texas A&M for seventh. No. 16 New Mexico, behind individual leader John Catlin’s eight-under 64, fired a 14-under 274 and leads Houston by five strokes and 34th-ranked Arizona by seven.
Juniors Mitchell Griffin, who had five birdies, and Nicko Dodd, who posted a two-under 34 on the front nine, both turned in one-over 73s and are tied for 31st. Meanwhile, sophomore Ryan Werre and redshirt freshman Martin Board are one shot back in a tie for 46th after recording two-over 74s.
A trio of Roadrunners competed as individuals.
Sophomore Eddie DeVane is tied for 67th after carding a four-over 76, while junior Taylor Koser and freshman Reed Stegall are tied for 74th (78) and 78th (81), respectively.
Round two gets underway with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday.
