LUBBOCK — UTSA received school-record performances from three athletes to highlight Friday's opening day of action at the Texas Tech Invitational.

Junior Phil Steinert shattered the weight throw standard he set at last year's Southland Conference Championships in winning the event for the second consecutive week. The Round Rock native tossed the implement 63-9 ½ (19.44m) and his measurement was more than five-and-a-half feet better than his nearest competitor. It was an improvement of four feet from his third-place measurement at last year's conference meet and he now holds a commanding lead in the league standings in addition to ranking 16th nationally.

Meanwhile, junior Nate Brunette peeled off a 21.49 en route to a second-place effort in the 200 meters. That performance broke Cedric Harris' six-year-old mark of 21.53, which was set at the 2006 Boise State Invitational. The Humble native easily won the fourth of 11 heats and only finished behind Texas A&M-Kingsville's Jonathan Woodson (21.37) in the field of 51 sprinters. Brunette now sits atop the Southland leaderboard.

Senior Albert Cardenas registered the evening's other record after clocking a 2:29.32 in a fourth-place finish in the 1,000 meters. That broke Justin Pitchford's previous mark of 2:30.25 set at the 2005 edition of this meet.

The Roadrunners also received a trio of solid performances in the field.

Sophomore Kerry Thompson matched his personal best in winning the high jump. The Haltom City native cleared 7-0 ¼ (2.14m) for the first indoor victory of his career.

Meanwhile, juniors Roscoe Robinson and Ronson Small finished second and third, respectively, in the long jump. Robinson broke the sand in 22-11 ¾ (7.00m), while Small was four inches behind his teammate.

The two-day meet concludes on Saturday.
