FRISCO — Sophomores Anka Grotle and Maria Jose Rojas earned first-team Southland Conference All-Academic honors, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. It marks the second time in program history that UTSA has placed a pair of players on the circuit's top squad.
Grotle, who carries a 3.18 GPA in kinesiology, is the second player in school annals to earn first-team all-conference and all-academic honors in the same season (Ezinne Okpo did so in 2007 & '09). The Bremanger, Norway, native also became the first player in team history to be named first-team All-Southland in back-to-back seasons after starting all 20 contests and logging a team-high 1,779 minutes on the pitch this fall. She helped lead the Roadrunners to eight shutouts and registered seven points (one goal/five assists).
Meanwhile, Rojas, who has a 3.64 GPA in accounting, picked up her first academic certificate after leading the team with 22 points on the strength of a career-high nine goals and four assists. The Santiago, Chile, native started 17 matches and recorded three game-winning goals, including an overtime strike to defeat Southeastern Louisiana in the Southland Tournament. Her .795 shot-on-goal percentage led the squad and she recorded eight points (three goals/two assists) during Southland play.
