NEW YORK CITY — Freshman Shahira Ehiemua's victory in the 60-meter dash college division on Friday night highlighted UTSA's opening day of action at the prestigious New Balance Invitational.
The Missouri City native peeled off a career-best 7.53 in the eight-woman final, which stands as the top time in the Southland Conference this season and the fourth-fastest performance in program annals. It came on the heels of the second-quickest preliminary heat time (7.63) in the field of 105 sprinters.
Meanwhile, the distance medley foursome of sophomores Isabel Balbontin, Grace Williamson, Nina Herrera and Alyssa Diaz clocked an 11:52.69 en route to a fourth-place finish in the college flight. Not only is it the top time in the league this year, but it also stands as the second-best in school history.
Freshman Carly Kitts raced to a seventh-place effort in the meet's opening event, the 3,000m. The Midlothian native clocked a 10:10.24, which is the third-best performance in program annals.
The two-day meet concludes on Saturday.
