SAN ANTONIO — Former UTSA men’s basketball player Devin Gibson has received an invitation to the San Antonio Spurs 2011 Training Camp, which gets underway Friday at the Spurs Practice Facility.

The Houston native helped guide the Roadrunners to a 20-14 record — the program’s first 20-win season in 19 years — and to the Southland Conference Tournament Championship in his final season in 2010-11. UTSA earned the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament and defeated Alabama State, 70-61, at the NCAA First Four for the school’s first-ever NCAA postseason victory in any sport.

One of two players in NCAA Division I to post two triple-doubles last year, Gibson ended his collegiate career as the Southland’s all-time career steals leader (323) and finished third as the third-leading scorer in school history with 1,681 points behind former Spurs guard Devin Brown (1,922) and Derrick Gervin (1,691). He also established career records for games played (119), starts (111), free throws (643) and assists (549). Gibson made a school-record 232 free throws as a senior and finished second in assists (183) and third in steals (91) on the single-season charts.

Gibson received first-team All-Southland honors after leading the league in assists (5.4), steals (2.7) and minutes played (35.0) and ranking fourth in scoring (17.0). He was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 State Farm Southland Conference Basketball Tournament after leading No. 7 seed UTSA to upsets of the top three seeds en route to its first title since 2004. He also was tabbed first-team All-District 23 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and he repeated as Southland Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year.
