WACO — Senior Albert Cardenas helped lead UTSA to a top-five finish at Saturday's NCAA South Central Regional, which was the program's best showing since placing second in 1997.
Cardenas wrapped up his career with a 22nd-place effort, which was good for all-region honors. The Converse native circled the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course 10,000-meter loop in 31:35.1 and it marked the third consecutive year that the Roadrunners had an athlete earn all-region accolades.
Fellow seniors Cole Reveal (31:54.9) and Brandon Chiuminetta (32:14.3) finished 30th and 38th, respectively, while redshirt freshman Mike Medrano (55th/32:52.9) and junior Daniel Balbontin (58th/32:56.2) rounded out the team's scorers.
UTSA accounted for 196 points en route to its fifth-place finish. Texas (40) won the team championship and the Longhorns will be joined by Texas A&M (56) at the NCAA Championships. Arkansas (65) and Lamar (93) also finished ahead of the Roadrunners. Meanwhile, Texas A&M's Henry Lelei won the individual crown in 30:09.4.
