Torres posts top three pentathlon finish at the Charlie Thomas Invitational

COLLEGE STATION – UTSA opened first day of the two-day Texas A&M-hosted Charlie Thomas Invitational on Friday. Gabriyella Torres highlighted the Roadrunners' efforts with a third-place finish in the pentathlon with 3,692 points, which ranks second on the Conference USA performance list.
 
Torres finished third in her pentathlon season debut with a career-best total. The junior's efforts were highlighted by a 5.47m (17' 11.50") leap in the long jump to place second in the discipline. Sophomore Chase Whiting also registered a personal-best 3,132 points in the event to place seventh. Her day featured personal-bests in both the 60-meter hurdles and long jump.
 
Through four events in the heptathlon Adrian Riley currently sits fifth on the leaderboard with 3,070 total points and Jake McDaniel ninth with 2,765 markers. Riley's 7.44m (24' 5.0") leap in the long jump decorated the senior's day as he placed first in the discipline. McDaniel showcased his shot put improvement with a personal-best hurl of 11.73m (38' 6.0").
 
The running of the 5,000m started the Roadrunners track events at the meet as Olivia Flores finished 14th with a 18:53.13 and Gabby Gonzales seconds behind with a 18:55.64 in 15th. In the men's event John von Dohlen ran a 15:19.42 to cross the line in13th. He was followed by Roadrunners Hunter Hawkins (15:39.04) and Martin Luevano (15:58.33) in 17th and 18th, respectively.

The Charlie Thomas Invitational continues on Saturday, Feb. 3 as the action gets underway with the conclusion of the heptathlon at 10:30 a.m. The rolling schedule of track events starts at 12:30 p.m. with 60-meter hurdles preliminary and continues through the women's and men's 4x400-meter relay. The field events also start at 12:30 p.m. with the men's long jump and weight throw, along with the women's shot put.
