COLLEGE STATION – The UTSA men's tennis team completed competition at the ITA Texas Regional Championships, which took place at George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners sent four student-athletes – Kai Breitbach, Gabriel Bugiga, Joao Ceolin and Juri Reckow – to compete in singles and doubles.
Both Ceolin and Reckow advanced to the Round of 32 in singles competition before bowing out.
Ceolin topped Abilene Christian's Paul Domanski (6-2, 6-3) and TCU's Alex McNeel (6-0, 6-4) in the first two rounds before he dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to top-seeded Harrison Scott of Texas.
Reckow knocked off UT Arlington's Andre Russo (6-2, 6-2) in the Round of 64. However, he was defeated in the Round of 32 by third-seeded Johannes Schretter, from Baylor, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
Breitbach dropped his opening singles match before earning a 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (10-2) victory against Texas Tech's Justin Loss in the third round of the consolation bracket. He then pulled out of the bracket due to injury.
Both UTSA doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals.
Breitbach and Ceolin teamed up to hand Rice's Oscar Janglin and Eric Rutledge an 8-7 (7) loss in the Round of 32. The duo then topped UTRGV's Dennis Boisseau and Koby Jansen, 8-6, in the Round of 16. The pairing saw their run come to an end in the quarterfinals following an 8-1 loss to the top-seeded team of Texas' Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles.
Meanwhile, Bugiga and Reckow defeated UTRGV's duo of Elliot Johnstone and Yehonatan Kaufman in the Round of 32, 8-3. In the Round of 16, the Roadrunner duo notched an 8-6 triumph against third-seeded Jimmy Bendeck and William Little of Baylor. However, the twosome fell in the quarterfinals to Texas Tech's Jackson Cobb and Alexander Sendegeya with an 8-5 setback.
UTSA will prepare for its final tournament of the fall, the Ron Wesbrooks Invitational, which will take place Nov. 3-5, in Beaumont.ITA Texas Regional Championship
