UTSA hires Nick Liegl as senior associate athletics director for business and finance

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey announced Wednesday that Nick Liegl has been hired as senior associate athletics director for business and finance and his appointment is effective immediately. He brings 13 years of successful business experience, including 10 in sports management, to the Roadrunners Athletics Department.

Liegl comes to the Alamo City from the United States Air Force Academy, where he served as the assistant athletics director for finance for the past 10 years. He developed, implemented, executed and supervised financial operations, budgeting, procurement and financial reporting for the athletics department's $45 million annual operating budget. Liegl also was a key member of the department's strategic plan working group that set strategic goals in addition to projecting revenues and expenses.

"I want to thank Lynn Hickey and the search committee for giving me the opportunity to join the UTSA Athletics family," Liegl said. "I am looking forward to being part of such a great institution that has tremendous growth potential in one of the largest cities in the country."

Liegl secured funding for multiple arena upgrades during his decade in Colorado Springs, including $2.1 million for the newly renovated Cadet Gym; new reserved seating, state of the art scoreboard and scorer's tables for Clune Arena; $2 million video/sound system for Cadet Ice Arena; and $2.9 million for a new video board at Falcon Stadium.

He also supervised the Falcons baseball team since 2013 and developed a fund-raising campaign to save the program from elimination in his first year as the sport administrator. Liegl renegotiated both the all-sport apparel contract for Air Force's 27 intercollegiate programs in 2010 and the football apparel contract again two years later.

The Lincoln, Neb., native previously served for three years as an active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force for the 305th Comptroller Squadron at McGuire AFB from 2003-06. Liegl first served as a deputy financial services officer before being promoted to commander of the financial analysis flight.

He received his bachelor's degree in management from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2003 and went on to earn his master's of business administration from the University of Nebraska in 2008. Liegl also was a 2012 graduate of the Sports Management Institute.

He played outfield and was a three-year letterman for Air Force's baseball program from 2001-03.

Liegl is married to the former Lenny Lopez and the couple has three children — Nate, Rory and Ryan.
